How we rate phone on a plan providers

Our phone-on-a-plan provider ratings are based on customer satisfaction across multiple purchase factors. It’s like asking thousands of Aussies what they think of their bundled phone and plan service and provider.

Canstar Blue surveyed 1,661 Australians with a current phone bundled with a plan for their feedback on phone on a plan providers they’ve used. Respondents had to have an active mobile phone on a plan service in their name and pay the bills on that account.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics.

Survey respondents are asked to rate their satisfaction with their handset and phone plan provider from zero to 10, with zero meaning extremely dissatisfied and 10 meaning extremely satisfied. Phone on a plan provider satisfaction is rated on the following criteria:

  • Overall satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with a phone on a plan provider as an individual score, NOT the combined total of all criteria.
  • Customer service: the provider offered good service and support that was easy to access when needed.
  • Value for money: the price paid for the plan was reasonable for the service provided.
  • Network coverage: the mobile network had good coverage and reception.
  • Plan flexibility: the provider offered some flexibility to change plans when needed.
  • Sign-up and activation: it was easy to sign up to and activate the plan and phone.
  • Billing: the phone bill was easy to understand and pay.

The winning brand is the brand that receives the highest Overall satisfaction rating after scores from the Overall satisfaction criteria are combined and averaged. Overall satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.

  • When we cannot determine a clear winner from the criteria for the Overall satisfaction rating, we will then look at the other criteria measured in the rating.
    • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and therefore win the award. If a clear leading brand still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

To qualify in the ratings results, providers must have received a minimum of 30 responses to be included. Therefore, not all providers which offer phones bundled with a plan are compared in this survey. Providers rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

  • Vodafone
  • Telstra
  • Optus

Other phone on a plan providers

There aren’t many other providers offering the option to buy a new phone on a plan. Southern Phone — which was our previous phone-on-a-plan provider winner in 2021, 2022 and 2023 — offers a small selection of phones to buy on a plan or outright, while TeleChoice is one of the few other telcos still in this market.

However, some other telcos may also offer devices — either new or refurbished — to bundle with a plan while the device is usually bought outright. Amaysim and Boost Mobile are a couple of the prepaid telcos offering new and/or refurbished phones.

Telcos no longer selling phones include Everyday Mobile (formerly Woolworths Mobile) which had previously offered a small range of new phones on a plan, while Belong was previously selling refurbished phones.

How to compare phone on a plan providers and plans

When you’re choosing a phone on a plan, the phone will likely be the deciding factor when looking for a plan. Telstra, Optus and Vodafone offer a wide range of phones, including popular devices from Apple and Samsung. Smaller providers like Southern Phone and TeleChoice may have a much more limited selection of phones to choose from.

Phone type

When you’re choosing a phone on a plan, the phone will likely be the deciding factor when looking for a plan. Telstra, Optus and Vodafone offer a wide range of phones, including popular devices from Apple and Samsung, while Southern Phone and other telcos typically offer a smaller range of devices. However, not every phone will be available on a plan, so if you have a certain phone in mind, especially a budget phone, you may need to buy outright from a retailer. If you know which phone you want and it’s available from several telcos, you may want to look into other factors to make your decision.

Plan length

Most telcos offering the option to buy a phone on a plan will also offer a payment period for that device, or a contract over a set period of time. Often it is the phone itself that is on the 12, 24 or 36-month payment period, while you’re free to switch between phone plans from the same telco prior to the end of that payment period. The catch is usually, though, that you’re not able to cancel your phone plan without paying off the remainder of the device costs. Consider how long you want to be locked into a device payment plan before signing up, keeping in mind that the longer the payment period, the cheaper the monthly cost will be.

Cost

The price of your plan will largely depend on which phone you choose, the storage size of the device, the payment period and the plan you choose to bundle your phone with. All of these factors can make the phone on a plan offering a rather expensive option, so it’s a good idea to set a budget and consider waiting for sales periods or choose an older model phone if you want to save some cash.

Data, coverage and other inclusions

While the phone might be the main deciding factor, you’ll also want to consider what else the telco has to offer. The data inclusions on the plan, the mobile network coverage and any extras available on the plan could help you choose between telcos. Before signing up to any plan, check the mobile network coverage map on the telco’s website to ensure you’ll have coverage where you live and in the places you frequent.

Frequently asked questions

Canstar Blue surveyed over 12,000 Australian adults across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who currently have an active mobile phone account (including a handset) in their name and pay the bills – in this case, 1,661 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
